A instancias de Eileen Egan de CRS, la Madre Teresa llega a los Estados Unidos por primera vez para dirigirse a la Convención Nacional del Consejo Nacional de Mujeres Católicas. Allí, ella les agradece a ellos, y a CRS, por su temprano apoyo a las Misioneras de la Caridad. Eileen, quien se unió a CRS en 1943 como nuestra primera laica, conoció a la Madre Teresa 5 años antes en Calcuta. Ella se convirtió en una defensora temprana de su trabajo y una amiga y corresponsal de por vida. CRS se asocia con la National Catholic Welfare Conference (Conferencia Nacional Católica de Bienestar) para reasentar a casi 500,000 refugiados cubanos—el 70% del total, en Miami. En 1966, eldepartamento de Servicios de Migración y Refugiados y Catholic Charities se hacen cargo de este trabajo, lo que lo convierte en el último proyecto de reasentamiento de refugiados de CRS en los Estados Unidos.

El Papa Pablo VI publica Populorum Progressio, su encíclica sobre el desarrollo de los pueblos, llamando al desarrollo “el nuevo nombre para la paz” y subrayando los principios de la doctrina social católica y el desarrollo humano integral. Más de 1 millón de personas se han visto desplazadas durante la Guerra de Biafra en lo que ahora es el este y sudeste de Nigeria. Durante la hambruna que siguió, CRS proporciona ayuda de emergencia para salvar vidas a pesar del bloqueo total de puertos y carreteras en el este. CRS organiza más de 100 arriesgados viajes aéreos de alimentos y medicinas.
